We Love Water — And That's Exactly Why We're Talking About This
By the team at Harrogate School of Swimming
Every time we hear about a water-related death, we feel it deeply. As swimming teachers, as people who have dedicated our lives to the water, and as members of a community who believe wholeheartedly in the joy and confidence that swimming brings, news like the tragedies of recent weeks stops us in our tracks. It never gets easier. It never feels less devastating.
And yet, in those moments, we are reminded of something important: the work we do here matters more than ever.
The Reality We Can't Ignore
Water is beautiful. Water is life-giving. Water brings families together, builds confidence in children, and creates memories that last a lifetime. We will never stop celebrating that. But water is also unforgiving. It doesn't discriminate. It doesn't give warnings. And it can turn a moment of joy into tragedy in seconds.
As a swim school, we see every day what water can give people. The smile on a toddler's face the first time they float independently. The pride of a child who swam their first full length. The relief of a parent watching their little one grow in confidence and capability. We love all of it.
But with that love comes responsibility. A deep, serious responsibility to educate, not just about how to swim, but about how to be safe around water.
National Drowning Prevention Week: 13 to 20 June
From 13th to 20th June it's National Drowning Prevention Week, and at Harrogate School of Swimming we'll be dedicating time in every single class that week to water safety education.
We'll be teaching our swimmers, from our youngest baby classes right through to our performance squads, the dos and don'ts of being around water. That includes never swimming alone, always having someone with you and ideally a lifeguard present. Knowing your limits, because open water behaves very differently to a pool and cold water shock can affect even strong swimmers. Respecting the flags and always following beach and open water safety signage. Knowing what to do if you see someone in trouble, which is to shout for help, signal and throw something they can hold onto rather than jumping in yourself. The Float to Live technique, which means if you get into difficulty you fight the instinct to thrash and instead float on your back, conserve energy and call for help. We also want to play a role in supporting parents to become educated about water dangers, the importance of supervising children at all times, because drowning can happen silently, in seconds, even in shallow water.
Not All Water Is Created Equal
One of the most important things we can teach families is that where you swim matters just as much as how you swim. Different bodies of water carry very different levels of risk, and understanding those differences really does matter.
Swimming pools with lifeguards are by far the safest place to swim, and for good reason. The water is clear, so a lifeguard can see a swimmer in distress immediately. The depth is marked and predictable. There are no currents, no tides, no hidden hazards beneath the surface. Temperature is controlled, so cold water shock isn't a factor. And trained lifeguards are watching at all times, ready to respond in seconds. If you or your children are swimming for leisure this summer, a lifeguarded pool should always be your first choice.
Rivers look calm on the surface, but beneath that calm lies a very different story. Currents can be strong and unpredictable, and underwater hazards like rocks, debris, weeds and submerged branches are often completely invisible. River temperatures can be shockingly cold even in summer, triggering cold water shock which causes involuntary gasping, panic and rapid exhaustion even in experienced swimmers. Depth can change dramatically and without warning. Rivers are particularly dangerous for children, who can be swept off their feet in water that appears shallow and slow-moving.
Lakes and reservoirs carry their own unique dangers. The water is often very cold year-round, even on a hot day, and the combination of cold water shock and distance from the bank has claimed many lives. Visibility underwater is often near zero. Reservoirs in particular frequently have strong underwater currents created by pumping systems that are invisible from the surface. Many are also private land, meaning there is no safety infrastructure and no one watching.
The sea demands enormous respect. Rip currents, which are fast-moving channels of water that pull swimmers away from shore, are responsible for the majority of lifeguard rescues on UK beaches every year. Tides can cut off escape routes with alarming speed. Waves can knock even strong adults off their feet. Water temperature in UK waters is cold enough to cause cold water shock even in midsummer. Always swim at an RNLI-patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags, never swim alone, and always check tide times before you go.
Our simple rule is this: if there's no lifeguard, think very carefully before you get in. That doesn't mean never enjoy open water. It means respect it, prepare for it, and never underestimate it.
What You Can Do Right Now
Water safety education doesn't stop at the poolside. Before you go near open water, check the RNLI's water safety guidance at rnli.org. If you're heading to the coast, look up the nearest RNLI station and understand the flag system before you arrive. Practice the Float to Live response with your children. Try floating on your back in the bath or pool, make it a game. It could one day save their life.
Talk openly about danger too. Children who understand risk are safer than children who are simply told not to go near water. Have honest, age-appropriate conversations about why water demands respect. And if your child can't yet swim, please do book lessons. A child who can swim confidently is safer around water. It doesn't eliminate risk, but it significantly reduces it.
From All of Us at HSOS
We started this school because we love swimming and we believe every person deserves the chance to experience that love safely. That mission hasn't changed since 2009, and it never will. To everyone affected by recent tragedies, our hearts go out to you. We carry those stories with us, and they make us more committed, not less.
This summer, please swim. Please enjoy the water. Please make memories with your families.
But please do it safely.
Join us during National Drowning Prevention Week, 13 to 20 June, as we dedicate our classes to water safety. If you have any questions about our lessons or would like to enrol your child, [get in touch](https://www.harrogateschoolofswimming.co.uk/contact) and we'd love to welcome you to the HSOS family.

Why Isn't My Swimmer Making Progress?
It's a question we hear from parents all the time, and if you've found yourself asking it, you're not alone. You've been dropping your child off at lessons every week, you've bought the goggles, the swim hat, and yet, it feels like they've been on the same level for months. Maybe the swimmer in the next lane seems to be flying ahead, while your child is still working on the same stroke. It's frustrating. We completely understand.
But before worry sets in, let's take an honest, reassuring look at why progress in swimming can sometimes feel invisible, even when it's absolutely happening.
Time in the Pool Matters More Than You Think
Swimming is a skill sport. Unlike reading or maths, where learning can happen anywhere, swimming only happens in the water. And the hard truth is that one 30-minute lesson per week while incredibly valuable, gives a child just over 26 hours of pool time per year. Compare that to the thousands of hours a child spends practising other skills, and you start to see why patience is so important.
Those precious minutes in the water are carefully structured by our teachers at Harrogate School of Swimming to maximise learning, but the body still needs repetition to build what teachers call "muscle memory." Every stroke, every kick, every breath requires the brain and body to talk to each other in a completely new language. That takes time and it takes water time specifically.
If you're keen to accelerate progress, even one extra trip to a public swimming session each week can make a meaningful difference. Not for intensive practice, just for splashing about, playing, and getting comfortable. Confidence in the water is a skill in itself, and free swim time builds it beautifully.
What Happens Outside the Pool Matters Too
It might surprise you to know that some of the most important swimming development happens on dry land. Sleep, nutrition, and general physical development all play a role in how quickly a child acquires new motor skills. A child going through a growth spurt, for instance, may temporarily feel less coordinated in the water as their brain catches up with their new body proportions. This is completely normal, and often a quiet period is followed by a sudden leap forward.
Equally, a child who is tired, anxious, or emotionally unsettled on the day of their lesson will find it harder to absorb new information. Learning requires a calm, available brain. If your child has had a difficult week at school or isn't sleeping well, that can show up in the pool even if it seems unrelated. Our teachers are trained to read these moments and adjust accordingly, focusing on consolidation and confidence rather than pushing new techniques on days when a child isn't quite themselves.
Progress Isn't Linear And That's Completely Normal
This is perhaps the most important thing we can tell you: progress in swimming does not move in a straight line. It never has, and it never will, for any swimmer at any level.
Learning typically follows what researchers call a "plateau and leap" pattern. A child will work on a skill for weeks, appearing to make no visible improvement, and then suddenly, almost overnight, something clicks. The body has been processing and practising beneath the surface all along, and one day it simply comes together. These leaps can feel like magic, but they're actually the product of all those weeks of patient, repetitive practice that seemed to be going nowhere.
What you observe as a parent at the side of the pool is often a snapshot rather than the full picture. The teacher sees the tiny adjustments: the head position improving slightly, the kick becoming fractionally more consistent, the breathing rhythm beginning to settle. These micro-improvements don't look like progress from the viewing gallery, but they are the building blocks of every major milestone.
Trust the process. Trust your child. Trust the water.
Celebrate the Mini Wins
We'd gently encourage every parent to rethink what "progress" looks like. In swimming, not all victories involve moving up a level or earning a new badge. Some of the most significant moments are smaller and quieter and they deserve to be celebrated just as loudly.
Did your child put their face in the water without hesitation today, when last month they gripped the poolside in fear? That is a huge win. Did they swim an extra two metres before stopping? Did they listen to feedback and actually try to adjust their arm position? Did they arrive at the lesson without the anxiety they used to feel? These are enormous achievements in a child's swimming journey, and they matter deeply.
At Harrogate School of Swimming, our teachers log these moments because we know how easy they are to miss. We encourage you to ask your child after every lesson not "did you go up a level?" but rather "what did you do well today?" or "was there anything that felt easier than before?" Shifting the conversation, even slightly can transform how a child feels about their own progress, and a child who feels good about swimming will always learn faster than one who feels like they're failing.
A Word From Our Teachers
Every child who walks through our doors is different. Different temperaments, different physical abilities, different relationships with water, different home lives. What unites them all is potential and the fact that every single one of them will swim. Some will get there faster, some will take the scenic route, but they will all get there.
If you have genuine concerns about your child's progress, please speak to your teacher. We have those conversations every week, and we love having them. We can explain exactly where your child is in their learning journey, what we're working on, and what you might be able to do to support them at home.
You're not in this alone. We're in it together one length at a time.
How to Help a Child Who Is Scared of Water
It’s completely normal for a child to feel nervous around water. In fact, one of the most common concerns we hear from parents is that their child is afraid of water and reluctant to start swimming lessons. The good news is that with the right approach, patience, and support, this fear can be gently overcome.
Every child is different. Some will jump straight in with confidence, while others need a little more time to feel safe and in control. If your child is scared of water, the key is not to rush the process, but to build their confidence step by step.
If you ask us, starting swimming at the earliest possible opportunity is the best course of action. You can read more about that in our last blog: https://www.harrogateschoolofswimming.co.uk/blog/what-age-should-my-child-start-swimming-lessons
Why Are Some Children Afraid of Water?
There are lots of reasons why a child might feel anxious. It could be a lack of early exposure, a previous negative experience, or simply uncertainty about something unfamiliar. For some children, even small things like splashing, noise, or not being able to touch the bottom can feel overwhelming.
Understanding that this fear is valid is the first step. Rather than trying to “push through it,” it’s far more effective to work with your child at their own pace.
Start Slowly and Keep It Positive
If you’re wondering how to overcome fear of swimming in children, the answer often begins outside of formal lessons. Simple, positive experiences with water can make a big difference.
Bath time is a great place to start. Encouraging your child to splash, pour water, and get comfortable with having water on their face can help build familiarity. When you do visit a pool, keep things relaxed and pressure-free. Sitting on the steps, playing games, or just paddling together can help your child associate water with fun rather than fear.
Praise and encouragement go a long way. Even the smallest steps, like putting toes in the water or blowing bubbles, are worth celebrating.
The Importance of Trust and Routine
Children who feel nervous benefit hugely from consistency. Returning to the same pool, seeing familiar faces, and following a predictable routine can help reduce anxiety over time.
Trust is also key. Children need to feel secure with both the adult they are with and the instructor guiding them. This is why calm, patient teaching makes such a difference, especially for a nervous child in swimming lessons.
Choosing the Right Swimming Lessons
Not all swimming environments are the same, and for a child who is afraid of water, the right setting can make all the difference.
Smaller class sizes allow for more individual attention, which is especially important for nervous beginners. At Harrogate School of Swimming, our Learn to Swim lessons run with a maximum ratio of 1 teacher to 4 children. This ensures every child gets the attention and reassurance they need to feel safe and supported.
We also run all of our beginner classes at Willow Tree Primary School, where the pool is kept at a warm 32 degrees. This helps children relax and feel comfortable from the moment they get in. The pool depth is 0.9 metres, meaning your little one can stand and touch the bottom, which can make a huge difference for children who are feeling unsure in the water.
Combined with gentle, supportive teaching methods, these small details help create an environment where children can build confidence at their own pace.
Let Your Child Set the Pace
One of the biggest mistakes parents can make is expecting quick progress. Confidence in the water doesn’t happen overnight, especially for children who start off feeling nervous.
It might take a few lessons just to feel comfortable standing in the pool, and that’s absolutely fine. Progress isn’t always about swimming distance or technique in the early stages. Sometimes, simply feeling relaxed enough to smile and enjoy the session is a huge step forward.
By allowing your child to move at their own pace, you’re helping them build a strong, lasting foundation of confidence.
A Skill That Lasts a Lifetime
Helping a child overcome their fear of water is about more than just learning to swim. It’s about building confidence, resilience, and trust in their own abilities.
With patience, encouragement, and the right support, even the most nervous children can learn to enjoy the water. And once that confidence starts to grow, everything else becomes much easier.
If your child is currently hesitant, don’t worry. It’s a very common starting point, and with the right approach, it’s one they can absolutely move beyond.
"What Age Should My Child Start Swimming Lessons?’
One of the most common questions parents ask us at Harrogate School of Swimming is when the right time is to start swimming lessons. The truth is, there isn’t a perfect age. It’s much more about finding the right setting and taking the first steps. Some children take to it straight away, while others take a little more time, perseverance, and patience.
What does matter is starting early if you can. Children who are introduced to water from a young age tend to feel more comfortable and confident, and that confidence stays with them. It’s not just about enjoyment either. Basic water skills like floating and staying calm can play an important role in keeping children safe. These are skills that come in really handy on those summer holidays.
At HSOS, we have programmes to ensure babies can begin as early as a few weeks old, with the pool at Willow Tree Primary School kept at a lovely 32 degrees to ensure the comfort of both baby and parent. At this early stage, it’s less about learning to swim and more about getting used to the water. Being in the pool together helps build trust, and babies start to develop natural movements like kicking and responding to the water. There’s also a great sensory benefit.
As children move into the toddler years, lessons become a bit more active and playful. This is a great time to build confidence through games and repetition. Skills like blowing bubbles, kicking, and getting comfortable putting their face in the water all start to develop, but it’s important that everything happens at the child’s pace, especially if they’re a little unsure at first.
By the time children reach three to five years old, many are ready to become more independent in the water. This is when they are gearing up to join the Learn to Swim programme that follows the Swim England stages. This is also when things often click quite quickly. They begin floating on their own, moving short distances, and picking up the early stages of proper swimming technique.
Once children are in school, lessons become more structured. The focus shifts towards building technique, stamina, and progressing through recognised Swim England stages. The goal is for children to be able to swim confidently and independently, ideally reaching 25 metres before leaving primary school. In honesty, at HSOS we believe this should be the absolute minimum. We’d like swimmers to attain their Swim England Stage 7 badge before thinking about stopping swimming.
If you’re wondering when to begin, we would say start now. It’s never too early, and the more exposure to water you can give your child, the quicker their learning will progress.
At Harrogate School of Swimming, the focus is on creating a calm, supportive environment where every child can develop at their own pace. Small class sizes, warm pools, and experienced instructors help ensure that children feel comfortable and make steady progress, whether they’re just starting out or building on existing skills.
In the end, the most important thing is simply getting started. The earlier a child builds confidence in the water, the easier everything else becomes.
March Update Full Speed Ahead
March has arrived and we have not slowed down for a second at Harrogate School of Swimming. It has already been a brilliant few months and there is lots to share.
February Half Term Intensives
What a week that was.
Our February Half Term Intensives were a huge success. The focus, effort and attitude from our swimmers was fantastic and it was great to see so much progress in such a short space of time. When swimmers are in the water every day, things really start to click. We saw improvements in technique, stronger strokes and a real boost in confidence across all levels.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. The atmosphere all week was spot on and we loved every minute of it.
Easter Intensives 30th March to 2nd April
We are now looking ahead to our Easter Intensives running from 30th March to 2nd April.
These sessions are ideal for swimmers who want to build confidence, fine tune their technique, consolidate their current stage or push on to the next level. Intensive weeks are a brilliant way to accelerate progress and give swimmers that extra time in the water that makes all the difference.
Spaces are always popular, so if you would like to book on, please get in touch sooner rather than later to secure your place.
New Friday Night Classes at Willow Tree Primary School
We are also really excited to be launching brand new Friday night classes at Willow Tree Primary School.

As with all new classes, spaces will be limited and offered on a first come first served basis. If you would like more information or would like to reserve a place, please get in touch and we will be happy to help.
It is shaping up to be another fantastic season in the pool and we are looking forward to seeing our swimmers continue to grow in skill and confidence over the coming months.
See you on poolside.
The Spring Term Begins
January Blog – Welcome Back!
Hey swimmers and parents, and Happy New Year!
The Christmas festivities are behind us, routines are slowly returning, and we’re well underway with the spring term. It’s been fantastic to see everyone back in the pool after the break, with lots of enthusiasm and plenty of energy from our swimmers. This term is an especially short one, only 12 weeks until Easter, but we still have plenty of time to run our full scheme of work, ensuring swimmers cover each piece of criteria on the Swim England stage they are aiming to achieve.
We are now taking bookings for our half-term intensives, running the week commencing 16th February. We’re still confirming the number of days and the location, but please get in touch to book a provisional place. These sessions are a great opportunity to keep your swimmer’s progress going through the half-term break.
Before the Christmas break, we sent out our annual customer survey. We were thrilled with the response and are excited to share that 93.8% of feedback rated our service as either Excellent or Very Helpful. We’ve taken your feedback on board and have some plans to make changes that will further improve your customer experience. Look out for updates soon!
January is always about settling back into lessons, rebuilding fitness, and refocusing after the holidays. Our swimmers have made a strong start, working on technique, stamina, and sharpening their skills as we get back into the term.
There’s a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks, with continued progress in lessons and some exciting opportunities ahead. As always, consistency and effort are key, but enjoying time in the water is just as important.
We’re also excited to announce a Performance Squad Gala planned for January 24th. This is a fantastic opportunity for our squad swimmers to race their peers in a fun and positive environment. Keep an eye on our socials to see all the action!
A big thank you to all parents for your ongoing support. We’re looking forward to a positive and productive spring term and a great year of swimming ahead.
The December Blog: A Time for Reflection and Celebration
The year is ending, with our last couple of weeks of term underway, and at this time of year we naturally take a moment to look back and reflect on our highlights.
This year has been an excellent one for Harrogate School of Swimming. We have continued to expand our programme and our offerings, while strengthening our ties with schools and the wider community.
We are really pleased to see an increase in overall membership from 686 swimmers to 735 over the final term of the year, representing a 7 percent uplift, with key additions across our three locations.
The introduction of Harrogate School of Baby Swimming in September 2025 ensures swimmers can now begin their aquatic journey from birth. We are offering 23 classes a week for different baby levels, all held at Willow Tree Primary School. With the addition of a changing table and baby mats, we have invested in making the environment as baby friendly as possible.
Our performance squad continues to go from strength to strength, with additional training days added and a squad that now has 25 dedicated members. We have also introduced pre squad classes to give younger swimmers a taste of a squad style session, supporting them on their journey into competitive swimming. We have a Performance Squad Gala planned for January, so look out for more news on these exciting plans.
We have also expanded our impact in the community by visiting 37 local nurseries to educate preschool children about water safety and how to enjoy swimming while staying safe.
We have a couple of weeks of sessions remaining until the end of term, followed by three days of intensives over the Christmas break. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our swimmers and families a fantastic Christmas and a well-deserved break.
I am proud of the team and what we are achieving. A big thank you to each teacher who goes above and beyond to make the swim school a success, and to each teacher who brings their individual flair and passion for teaching.
Making a Splash This November: Swimming Progress and Holiday Intensives in Harrogate

These last few weeks are a great opportunity for swimmers to make real progress before the year ends, and we’re looking forward to seeing which swimming badges everyone can earn.
The weeks leading up to Christmas are always exciting. We have some busy times ahead, with Christmas swimming celebrations, distance swims, and fun sessions planned for children and adults alike.
We’ve also put plans in place for our holiday intensive swimming courses over the Christmas break. We’ll be running a three-day intensive from the 29th to the 31st of December at Harrogate Ladies' College. We have a few group swimming lessons and 1-to-1 swimming lessons in Harrogate available, so please get in touch if you’d like to join us over the break.
We’re excited to say that we’ll be attending the Harrogate Mumbler Awards on Saturday the 29th. This is a great opportunity to support other local Harrogate businesses, and we’re thrilled to see who takes home the awards. In other community news, our Head of Baby Swimming, Sarah, has recently been visiting local nurseries to educate little ones on the importance of water safety. By introducing these key messages at an early age, we can help set children up for a lifetime of swimming confidence in Harrogate.
Speaking of Harrogate School of Baby Swimming, our programme continues to go from strength to strength. We’ve recently invested in new changing tables for our facilities at Willow Tree, which we hope will make getting your little one changed and ready for baby swimming classes in Harrogate even easier.
Whether your child is learning to swim for the first time or preparing for their next swimming badge, our team is dedicated to helping every swimmer build confidence, technique, and a love for the water.

Highlights from the 2024 Academic Year
Performance Squad Formation
One of the biggest achievements this year has been the creation of our Performance Squad, now 22 swimmers strong. Each of these swimmers has grown through our Learn to Swim program and now trains multiple times a week in a competitive, technique-driven environment. A major highlight was our first in-house gala, where the squad showcased their progress. We can't wait to see how they evolve next year.Program Growth & Innovation
Our Learn to Swim program has grown to include over 700 swimmers, a testament to our dedicated team and supportive swim families. We also introduced Swimphony, a system that’s streamlined payments and made swimmer progress tracking more transparent for parents.Listening & Evolving
After launching our annual customer survey in November, we were thrilled with the positive feedback and took action by making viewable swimmer feedback available via the Swimphony portal. Now parents can stay more informed about their child's journey — anytime.
Coming September: Harrogate School of Baby Swimming
Looking ahead, we’re so excited to announce the launch of something brand new — the Harrogate School of Baby Swimming, starting this September.

There’s something so satisfying about watching a swimmer beam with pride as they’re awarded a new badge. It’s not just a marker of skill—it’s a symbol of persistence and growth. This month, we’ll be celebrating those achievements in and out of the water.
A Touch of Play
We’re keeping the joy alive by introducing playful elements in the last few lessons of the term. These sessions help reinforce a love of water, boost confidence, and ensure we end the season on a high note.
Planning Ahead
Behind the scenes, we’re already looking forward to what’s next. Our autumn term plans are taking shape, with improvements and surprises in store to keep our swimmers progressing and inspired.
July is more than just a finish line—it’s a celebration of everything we’ve worked toward so far. Thank you for being part of our vibrant community. Let’s make this final month of the season as memorable as the milestones we’ve already reached.
Here’s to strong strokes, big smiles, and a brilliant summer ahead.

June News – Safety, Progress & Summer Ahead!
We’re well into the term now, and with just six weeks to go until the summer holidays, it might feel tempting to start winding down. But there’s still plenty of time for our swimmers to make huge progress before term ends – giving parents real peace of mind heading into the summer break.
And speaking of summer… from 14th to 22nd June, we’ll be taking part in RLSS National Drowning Prevention Week. During this week, all our lessons will have a slightly different focus – helping our swimmers build confidence and awareness around water safety.
We’ll be covering:
The do’s and don’ts of staying safe around water
How it feels to swim in clothes (yes – swimmers will be wearing pyjamas!)
What to do if you or someone else gets into trouble in the water
These are valuable life skills that go beyond swimming technique and are important for every swimmer to learn.
Looking ahead, our Summer Intensives are now open for booking!
📅 Dates:
21st – 25th July
18th – 22nd August
26th – 29th August
Each intensive offers 30-minute lessons every day for a week, giving swimmers the chance to skyrocket their progress in a short space of time. Whether your child needs a confidence boost, help moving up a group, or just wants to keep swimming through the holidays – these sessions are ideal.
👉 Spaces fill quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment!
We’re so proud of how far our swimmers have come already this year – let’s keep the momentum going as we head towards summer.
May Blog: Trust the Process – Progress Is Happening
As we head into May and enjoy the warmer weather, it's the perfect time to reflect on progress—both in and out of the pool.
At Harrogate School of Swimming, we know that every swimmer’s journey is unique. It’s easy to feel frustrated if you think you're not improving as quickly as you'd like. But here’s an important reminder: just because progress isn’t always visible, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
Swimming is all about consistency and repetition. Think of it like building a house—one brick at a time. A single brick might not look like much on its own, but brick after brick, the structure begins to take shape. Each kick, stroke, and practice session is a brick in your foundation. Over time, all that hard work adds up—and the results will shine through.
We’ve been seeing fantastic effort and dedication from our swimmers this term, and we’re so proud of how everyone is developing. Whether it’s mastering a new stroke, building confidence, or simply showing up with a positive attitude, every step counts.
☀️ With half-term on the horizon, a quick reminder: There will be no swimming lessons the week commencing 26th May 2045. Enjoy a well-earned break, and come back refreshed and ready to build even more bricks!
Until then, keep swimming, keep smiling, and trust the process—you’re doing better than you think.
See you at the pool!

🌸 April at Harrogate School of Swimming – Diving into a New Term! 🌊
We’re back! After a well-earned and (hopefully!) relaxing Easter break, it’s been wonderful to welcome our swimmers and families back to the pool for the start of the summer term here at Harrogate School of Swimming.
The first few lessons back have been fantastic — it’s clear that everyone’s ready to jump back in and keep progressing toward their swimming goals. Whether your child is just starting to find their confidence in the water, or working on perfecting their strokes, our instructors can support you with whatever your individual goals are.
💪 Easter Intensives – A Splashing Success!
During the break, we were fortunate to run two Easter Intensive Courses @harrogate Ladies college and @Willow Tree Primary School — and what a great turnout we had! These sessions are such a valuable opportunity for swimmers to boost their confidence and skills in a short time, and we saw fantastic progress across the board. Huge well done to all our swimmers who took part – and thank you to the parents for your continued support.
☀️ Looking Ahead to Summer
As we head into the longer days and (hopefully!) warmer weather, now is a great time to keep up the momentum in the pool. The run up to the Easter Holidays!
Easter Term Recap at Harrogate School of Swimming
As the Easter holidays approach, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what has been an absolutely fantastic first term of 2025 at Harrogate School of Swimming! From the addition of more adult and child classes to an ever-growing number of swimmers across our three locations, we couldn’t be happier. Watching our swimmers grow in confidence and skill has been a joy—though we do apologize for all the extra splashes parents have endured on the sidelines!
In our end-of-year survey, many of you mentioned that you’d like more insight into your child’s progress. We heard you loud and clear! You can now track progress via the Swimphony app, where you can see exactly where your swimmer has been assessed in relation to their Swim England badges. No more waiting and wondering—just log in and take a peek at their achievements!
We’ve also made an exciting addition to our program this term with the introduction of adult group classes. These small group sessions cater to individual needs and are perfect for anyone looking to improve their technique and confidence in the water. We still have a few spots available on Monday and Wednesday evenings, so if you're ready to take the plunge, get in touch!
Looking ahead to the Easter holidays, we’re egg-cited (yes, we went there) to be running two intensive courses at Harrogate Ladies’ College and Willow Tree Primary School. These sessions are a great way to fast-track progress, so if you’d like to hop in and join us for some extra swimming fun, we still have spaces available for group classes and private 1-to-1 sessions. Don't wait too long—spaces fill up quickly!
Thank you for being part of our swimming family. We’re so grateful for your support and can’t wait to see even more progress in the next term. Wishing you all a wonderful Easter break!
And Just Like That, Half Term Is Upon Us!
Hey everyone,
As we fast approach the half-term break, we want to take a moment to celebrate what a fantastic start to the year it has been! We have seen incredible progress from our swimmers, with a record number of badges achieved this half-term—well done to all of you!
At the end of last year, we conducted our annual Customer Feedback Survey, and we are thrilled to share that over 87% of you rated us as EXCELLENT when asked, “How positive has your overall experience been at Harrogate School of Swimming?” Thank you for your continued support and kind words—it means the world to us!
We have carefully listened to all of your feedback, and one key area raised was children's progression and how it is communicated to parents. In response to this, we have made some exciting updates to Swimphony! From February 23rd, you will now be able to track your child’s progress on Swimphony, including which criteria they have been assessed against in their current Swim England level. We hope this will provide greater transparency and keep you informed about your child’s swimming journey.
Additionally, last week, we sent out an important communication regarding our VAT status and what this means for our members. If you haven’t received this update, please reach out to us at your earliest convenience so we can ensure you have all the necessary information.
Reminder: April Easter Intensives!
From the week commencing April 7th, we will be running two intensive swimming courses: one at Harrogate Ladies’ College (7th-12th April) and another at Willow Tree Primary School (8th-12th April). We still have a few spots remaining, so if you’re interested, be sure to secure your place soon!
Thank you all for your continued support. We look forward to seeing even more progress in the coming weeks and celebrating more achievements together!
Best wishes,
The Harrogate School of Swimming Team
"New Year, New Splash: Harrogate School of Swimming Faces a Snowy Pause!"
Happy New Year to all our swimmers, parents, and teachers! We hope everyone had a fantastic festive break filled with joy, relaxation, and plenty of holiday cheer. As we dive into 2025, we’re excited for the year ahead and all it has in store.
Unfortunately, the new year has started with a little hiccup. The unpredictable British weather has made its presence known, and like many local schools and clubs, we've had to adjust our plans to prioritize everyone’s safety. A sprinkling of snow (arctic downpour, more like it!) can cause quite the disruption, and we've had to make some cancellations in response to the icy conditions. We deeply appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate these challenges, ensuring the well-being of our swimmers, teachers, and parents. Rest assured, we’re looking forward to resuming regular sessions as soon as it’s safe to do so!
Before the winter break, we launched our Customer Satisfaction Survey, and we are thrilled with the response! Over 86% of parents rated us as excellent, and your feedback has been invaluable. This survey is a fantastic opportunity for our members to share their thoughts and help us continue to grow and improve. We’re already working on some exciting updates based on your feedback, including enhancements to our progress tracking system and facilities. We’ll keep you posted as these improvements take shape!
The winter break also gave us time to reflect on the amazing achievements of the past year. From seeing so many swimmers reach personal milestones to hosting memorable events, 2024 was truly a year to celebrate. As we look ahead, we’re filled with excitement and ambition. We’ve set some big goals for 2025, and we’ll be sharing more about them in the coming months.
Thank you for being part of the Harrogate School of Swimming community. Here’s to a fantastic year of learning, growth, and success—both in and out of the pool. Stay warm, stay safe, and we’ll see you soon!
Warm wishes,
The Harrogate School of Swimming Team
